I am a Smoker—How do I Maintain My Oral Health? 

Your mouth is the first entry to your body. When you light up a cigarette and exhale that puff, you may not likely think about its effects on oral health. However, tobacco use affects your smile’s health and appearance. 

Here’s how: 

• Stained teeth: Nicotine and tar quickly discolor your enamel, causing unsightly yellow or dark stains. 
• Persistent bad breath: Smoking encourages plaque formation, which creates a perfect environment for odor-causing bacteria.  
• Gum disease: Smoking weakens the immune system, making it harder to fight off gum infections.
• Delayed healing: Smoking reduces oxygen and nutrient delivery in your body, slowing your healing rate. This means a chronic smoker will experience delayed healing after extraction, root canal, implant surgery, etc. 
• Oral cancer risk: Tobacco use is one of the leading causes of oral cancer. To put this in perspective, smokers are 5–10 times more likely to develop oral cancer compared to non-smokers.

Just because you smoke, it doesn’t mean you can’t prevent bad breath, discolored teeth, or gum disease. Of course, the best option would be to quit, but that’s easier said than done. As you work on quitting, here are tips you can observe to maintain healthy teeth and gums. 

• Practice good oral hygiene: While this is a requirement for all patients, smokers need it more. Brush and floss your teeth twice daily, preferably in the morning and before bedtime. Don’t forget to clean your tongue because it harbors bacteria that cause bad breath and affect your taste. 
• Use a mouthwash: One of the common complaints of smokers and ex-smokers is bad breath. Rinsing your mouth with an antibacterial oral rinse can keep your breath fresh and mouth healthy. 
• Stay hydrated: Smoking reduces saliva production, increasing your risk of dry mouth (xerostomia). Drinking water helps wash away harmful particles and keeps tissues moist.
• Maintain a healthy diet: Fruits, vegetables, and calcium-rich foods strengthen teeth and gums, offsetting some of the negative effects of smoking. Avoid sugary foods and drinks to reduce the risk of gum disease, tooth decay, and other issues.
