Restore Your Smile’s Appearance and Function with Minimally Invasive Dental Inlays and Onlays
Dental inlays or onlays are custom-made restorations used to repair tooth damage. They are also known as indirect fillings. They are used to repair tooth damage that is too pronounced for a tooth filling but does not qualify for crown restoration.
Do you need dental inlays or onlays in Baton Rouge, Louisiana? Welcome to Biggio Dental Care! Dr. Chad Biggio uses indirect fillings to repair teeth conservatively, whether your teeth have large defective fillings or damage from trauma.Â
What exactly are dental inlays and onlays?
A dental inlay repairs tooth damage in the chewing surfaces of your tooth, including the pits and fissures between the cusps. Dental onlays, sometimes called partial crowns, cover a greater area extending to one or more cusps. Dental onlays and inlays are more conservative than dental crowns because they involve less removal of the tooth structure.
Dental inlays and onlays can be created from several materials, including composite, porcelain, and metal. Our fillings are made from tooth-like materials to create a seamless restoration. When we repair your tooth with an inlay/onlay, the results look natural, and there will be no evidence of dental work.
How are dental inlays and onlays made?
Unlike composite fillings, inlays and onlays are made in a dental lab, so you need at least two dental appointments to restore your tooth. Your treatment starts with a consultation to establish the extent of damage and that only an inlay/onlay is required. If so, we’ll numb your tooth with local anesthetics to ensure a painless treatment.
While your tooth is still numb, we’ll gently remove any decay/and or old filling. We’ll then shape the tooth carefully to create a proper fit for your onlay restoration. The next step is to digitally scan your tooth to be used to fabricate your bespoke restoration. Until your restoration is ready, we’ll protect your tooth temporarily with a tooth filling.
During your second appointment, the dentist will “try in” your restoration to ensure it meets your expectations. If any adjustments are needed, we’ll fine-tune the restoration for a perfect fit and a comfortable bite. That’s all there is to your onlay/inlay restoration. You can now chew painlessly and smile confidently.
How long do dental inlays and onlays last?
Like many dental restorations, indirect fillings are not permanent and may need replacement. However, with proper care, these restorations are incredibly long-lasting. Indirect fillings can last well over two decades and even longer, giving you a beautiful, lasting smile.
What are the benefits of indirect fillings?
