Most people don’t think about periodontal care until they develop problems with their gums. Biggio Dental Care emphasizes prevention to keep your gums healthy and issue-free. However, when gum infections sneak into your smile, Dr. Chad Biggio provides conservative yet effective periodontal disease treatments to restore optimal periodontal health.
Since gum disease is progressive, if you suspect it, immediately schedule an appointment with our Baton Rouge, Louisiana office. Left unaddressed, periodontal disease can cause soft tissue damage and tooth loss.
Periodontal disease is a “silent thief” of your smile. It develops without concerning signs and only becomes evident at an advanced stage. The earliest form of gum disease (gingivitis) develops when plaque is left to thrive in the mouth. Dental plaque is a sticky, colorless film that clings to your teeth over time. Plaque is removable by brushing and flossing. However, when you fail to observe optimal oral hygiene, plaque multiplies as the bacteria within it secrete toxic substances that irritate your gums, causing gingivitis.
The common symptoms of gingivitis include:
Gingivitis can progress into periodontitis, a more severe gum disease, when left untreated. As the infection worsens, the gums pull away (recede) from the teeth, forming deep pockets. These pockets become breeding grounds for bacteria, leading to further infection and damage to the supporting bone and tissue. This can result in tooth loss and other serious complications if not addressed.
The dentist will examine your gums for signs of swelling, redness, and recession. A periodontal probe is often used to measure the depth of the space between your gums and teeth. In healthy gums, this depth is typically no more than 3mm. If your readings exceed 3mm, it indicates the presence of gum disease, with deeper measurements signaling a more advanced infection. For severe cases, the dentist may take dental X-rays to assess the extent of jawbone loss and other periodontal defects.
Gingivitis is reversible with regular dental cleanings and diligent at-home oral hygiene of brushing, flossing, and oral rinsing. Moderate to severe gum infection is treatable with deep teeth cleaning, a two-pronged procedure that uses scaling and root planing to clean the deep periodontal pockets to remove built-in plaque and tartar. The dentist then smoothes out your tooth roots to remove rough spots that attract unwanted bacteria, plaque, and other unhealthy deposits.
Advanced gum disease may need pocket reduction surgery and grafting services. No matter the state of your periodontal health, we’ll guide you until you achieve optimal oral health.
