When teeth become worn, decayed, or damaged, it’s time to see your Baton Rouge restorative dentist. Restorative dentistry from Biggio Dental Care will bring your smile back to life! Here are some questions we’re often asked about restorative treatment.
What is restorative dentistry?
Restorative dentistry refers to dental treatments that repair worn, decayed, or damaged teeth, treat infected teeth, or replace missing teeth to restore your smile’s health and functionality. Among these is tooth extraction, when absolutely needed, to preserve your oral health.

How long do restorative treatments take?
That depends on the procedure. Each treatment is unique in its application and use. Fillings, inlays, and onlays can generally be completed in a single dental visit. The procedure for root canal treatment can be completed in one dental appointment, but you’ll need to return for a crown. Crowns can take several weeks, bridges two to three weeks, and dentures several months. Implants can take from three to nine months to complete due to the gradual process of osseointegration.
Is restorative dentistry painful?
As many of these treatments are invasive,
Dr. Biggio will use local anesthesia for your procedure to ensure you feel no pain. Sedation is also available for anxious patients. You can expect some gum swelling and soreness after the anesthesia wears off. OTC pain medication can help relieve these symptoms until they eventually fade.
How long after tooth extraction can I put an implant?
The timeline for getting an implant after tooth extraction can vary from patient to patient. If you have a strong, healthy jawbone, we may be able to place an implant on the same day of extraction. Some patients wait eight to twelve weeks while others wait three to six months for implant placement to give their gums sufficient time to heal. Dr. Biggio can guide you in making this decision.
Why should I restore damaged teeth instead of having them removed?
If your teeth can be restored, it’s recommended you do so to preserve your natural smile. Tooth extraction is usually a last resort when no other treatment can salvage your tooth. Restoring teeth is better for your oral health and saves you the expense of replacing pulled teeth later on.
