A damaged tooth can be a major distraction in life. Not only does it ruin the appearance of your smile, but it can also cause painful chewing, making it hard to enjoy your meals. At Biggio Dental Care in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, we repair damaged teeth with dental crowns so you can smile and eat confidently again. Dr. Chad Biggio answers your questions about crown treatment here.
What are crowns, and how are they used?
Crowns are tooth-shaped caps for your teeth, made from porcelain, ceramic, gold, metal alloys, or a combination of these materials. They’re designed to restore teeth that are in bad shape due to decay, wear and tear, or accidental injury. Crowning a tooth restores its original color, shape, and structure, making it fully functional again. Crowns are also used to support
dental bridges and to replace teeth on single
implants.
What should I expect from the crown procedure?
Dr. Biggio will examine your tooth and assess the damage to determine whether it can be repaired with a crown. If so, we’ll prep your tooth by filing down jagged edges or reshaping it to make room for the crown. We’ll discuss your options for crowns and determine the type that’s best for you. Then we’ll take impressions of your mouth to use in creating a custom crown for your tooth. As lab-made crowns can take up to two weeks to fabricate, we’ll place a temporary crown during this interim. When your lab-made crown is ready, we’ll ensure it fits properly over your tooth and permanently cement it in place.
How long do crowns last?
Gold and metal crowns can last a lifetime. Porcelain and ceramic crowns can last 15 to 20 years, depending on how well you care for your tooth. Crowns, like all dental work, need care to stay in good shape over the long term.
How do I care for a crown?
Good oral care is a must if you want your crown to last a long time. To care for a crown, simply brush and floss your tooth daily to remove plaque and debris. Avoid overly hard foods that could damage or crack your new crown. If you have trouble with teeth grinding, ask your dentist about a night guard.
Is it cheaper to pull a tooth than get a crown?
Dental extraction is a last resort that should only be considered if there is absolutely no way to save the tooth. While pulling a tooth may seem easier, you’ll have to replace that tooth later on to keep healthy teeth from shifting. In contrast, dental crowns are strong and enduring and will keep your natural smile intact. Your smile will look, feel, and function as good as new after getting a porcelain or ceramic crown!
